Breaking the Silence: Why Menstrual Hygiene Matters

Menstruation is a natural biological process—yet for millions of girls and women in India, it remains shrouded in stigma, misinformation, and shame. At the Nitish Sahay Foundation, we believe it’s time to break the silence and make menstrual hygiene a priority, not a taboo.

For too long, conversations around periods have been whispered behind closed doors. Girls are taught to hide sanitary products, avoid certain foods, and even stay away from school or public events during their cycle. This silence doesn’t protect them—it harms them.

The Real Impact of Period Shame

In many parts of rural and urban India, girls drop out of school after hitting puberty simply because they lack access to basic menstrual hygiene products and safe sanitation. Imagine choosing between education and dignity. That is the daily reality for millions.

Poor menstrual hygiene can also lead to serious health problems like urinary tract infections (UTIs), reproductive infections, and long-term complications. But more than physical health, it deeply affects a girl’s confidence, mental well-being, and freedom.

Our Response: Pad The Way

Through our campaign Pad The Way, the Nitish Sahay Foundation has distributed thousands of sanitary pads to underserved girls and women—especially in slums, tribal belts, and the Yamuna Khadar region. But we’re not just giving pads—we’re starting conversations.

We hold awareness sessions, involve men and boys, train local women as Menstrual Health Ambassadors, and work with schools to create period-friendly environments.

Why It Matters

Menstrual hygiene is not a women’s issue—it’s a human rights issue. It’s about ensuring every girl can go to school, every woman can work with dignity, and no one is held back by biology.

Breaking the silence isn’t just about words—it’s about action, education, and compassion. We invite you to join us in this movement to ensure every period is safe, clean, and shame-free.

Because dignity should never come at the cost of silence.
