Education in Urban Slums: Our Model of Change
By Nitish Sahay Foundation
Behind the tall buildings and shining malls of our cities lie the forgotten lanes of urban slums, where childhood dreams are often buried under the weight of poverty, illiteracy, and survival. Yet, in those very lanes, we at the Nitish Sahay Foundation see potential, promise, and possibility.
Through our grassroots initiative, we’ve developed a unique and inclusive model of change that’s helping bring education to children who need it the most.
The Challenge: More Than Just a Lack of Schools
Education in slums isn’t just about the absence of classrooms—it’s about broken homes, child labour, gender bias, malnutrition, and fear. Many children are first-generation learners. Some are pulled into work as early as age 7. Girls often stop studying after puberty. For most families, education is a luxury they simply can’t afford.
Our Model of Change: Holistic, Flexible, and Community-Led
At Nitish Sahay Foundation, we designed an education model not based on what the system offers, but based on what the child needs.
1. Learning Centres in the Heart of Slums
We bring classrooms to the children—right inside the slum community. No travel, no fear. Just learning in a safe, familiar space with trained local educators.
2. Flexible Timing, Full Commitment
We understand that many children work or take care of siblings. Our classes are flexible—morning and evening shifts, open on weekends—so learning never stops.
3. Bridge Learning Programs
For children who have never attended school or dropped out early, we offer bridge courses that help them catch up and eventually get admitted to formal schools.
4. Focus on Girls’ Education
We actively involve mothers, provide sanitary pads, hold awareness sessions, and ensure our centres are girl-friendly and safe.
5. Digital Access for the Marginalised
With donated tablets and offline learning modules, we introduce children to basic digital skills, opening doors to a world beyond the slum.
6. Nutrition + Education
We provide daily meals or snacks to ensure children aren’t learning on an empty stomach. A well-fed child is a better learner.
Impact That Inspires
Razia, 12, from a slum in Delhi, had never been to school. Today, she not only reads fluently in Hindi and English but also teaches her younger brother. Dozens of our students have successfully enrolled in government schools, and many aspire to be teachers, nurses, or entrepreneurs.
The Road Ahead
Education in slums is not just about teaching ABCs—it’s about restoring dignity and hope. It’s about giving a child a reason to dream beyond their daily struggle.
At Nitish Sahay Foundation, we will continue to walk these narrow lanes, knock on every door, and light every mind we can—because true change begins with one child who is taught to believe.
