Hunger Is Not a Choice: Why We Serve

In the bustling cities and remote corners of India, hunger wears many faces—a child with a dry lunchbox, an elderly woman sipping water to quiet an empty stomach, or a daily-wage worker unsure of their next meal. Hunger is not a choice, but feeding someone is.

At the Nitish Sahay Foundation, our mission began with a simple belief: no one should go to bed hungry. This belief gave birth to our campaign—Food For All—a movement that goes beyond food; it’s about dignity, empathy, and justice.

The Hidden Crisis

India wastes millions of tonnes of food every year, yet over 190 million people sleep hungry. The contradiction is painful. Behind every statistic is a story—of resilience, struggle, and silent suffering. Hunger isn’t always visible, but its impact is deep. It weakens immunity, reduces focus in children, and forces families to make impossible choices.

We’ve seen this firsthand—in the slums of Delhi, the flood-affected regions of Yamuna Khadar, and among migrant workers during the pandemic. A warm meal, often taken for granted, becomes a lifeline.

Why We Serve

We don’t serve food as charity—we serve it as a responsibility. Through community kitchens, meal distribution drives, and volunteer-run food boxes, we’ve delivered not just nutrition but hope.

Our volunteers walk miles, brave harsh weather, and cook through the night—because we understand that for many, our meal might be the only one they have that day.

Food Is a Right, Not a Privilege

Serving food is not just an act of giving—it’s an act of standing up for equality. Hunger should never be normalised, never be ignored. In a world of abundance, hunger is a tragedy we can end—with awareness, collective effort, and compassion.

At the Nitish Sahay Foundation, we will continue to serve until no plate is empty and no heart is hopeless. Because hunger may not be a choice, but feeding someone always is—and we choose to serve.
